Brahimi wins BBC African footballer of the year award
Brahimi wins BBC African footballer of the year award

The player praised the role of FC Porto in winning the award and dedicated it to his family, Algeria and Africa

Yacine Brahimi, Algerian forward playing for FC Porto, won the BBC 2014 African Footballer of the Year award, beating the competition set by Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund), Nigerian Vincent Enyeama (Lille) and Ivoirians Gervinho (Rome) and Yaya Touré (Manchester City). The voting was done by fans. After the ceremony to present him with the award, held this Monday at Estádio do Dragão, the Algerian stated that it is a “great honour” and promised “commitment and determination” to keep evolving.

“I am honoured to receive this award. It means a lot to me and I would like to dedicate it to my family, above all, but also to Algeria and all the African nations. Until now, 2014 has been a great year and I have to stay on this path, working even harder to evolve and to win trophies with my club, FC Porto, and, if possible, in CAN (Cup of African Nations), for Algeria”, Brahimi stated to Porto Canal and www.fcporto.pt.

The Algerian international player praised the role of FC Porto in winning the award and stated he couldn’t have done it by himself: “I have to thank my new club, my team mates, the coach and the staff and everyone at the club”. Brahimi also admitted that he is happy with the fact that this is “the first time an Algerian player wins this award”, and hopes “it won’t be the last one”, pointing out the positive influence the award can have on his career: “It gives me commitment and determination to work even harder, to do more and to improve every day”.

The Algerian player follows Yaya Touré, who won the award in 2013. The BBC African Footballer of the Year Award started in the year 2000 and has been gaining prestige with each passing year: after 15 editions, it awarded players such as George Weah, Jay Jay Okocha and Didier Drogba. For Brahimi, it was the second award he won in little over a month, after having been nominated African Player of the Spanish League in 2013/2014, then playing for Granada.
